Corporate sustainability planning: common questions
What is the difference between Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions?
Scope 1 covers direct emissions from sources an organization owns or controls, such as on-site natural gas combustion and vehicle fleets. Scope 2 covers indirect emissions from purchased electricity, steam, heating and cooling. For most commercial organizations Scope 2 is the larger of the two, and it is the one that energy procurement decisions can directly change.
Do renewable energy certificates actually reduce emissions?
RECs address market-based Scope 2 accounting and are accepted under the GHG Protocol for that purpose. Whether a given purchase drives new renewable generation depends on the instrument — long-term PPAs and additionality-focused purchases make a stronger claim than unbundled RECs bought annually. The distinction matters increasingly as reporting frameworks tighten and as claims are scrutinised.
What should come first in a sustainability plan?
Load reduction. Renewable attributes are priced per unit consumed, so buying them against consumption that an efficiency project would have eliminated means paying a premium on volume that should not have existed. Reduce, then procure for what remains — the sequence is what keeps the program defensible on cost as well as on substance.
How do building performance ordinances affect energy planning?
A growing number of cities require commercial buildings to benchmark and disclose energy use, and several now impose performance standards with financial penalties for non-compliance. Where those apply, the energy plan has a compliance deadline attached, which changes it from a voluntary program into a scheduled obligation with a budget.
