Load that cannot be curtailed puts everything into the contract
A data center runs flat, high and continuously, and it cannot curtail. That removes the entire demand-side toolkit that other large loads rely on and concentrates the strategy into three places: the supply contract, the tariff, and long-term renewable supply.
The compensating advantage is that a flat, near-unity load factor is the most attractive profile a supplier can price. It carries almost no shape or balancing risk, and data center operators should be earning a materially better rate than variable commercial loads in the same territory — something a rate analysis will confirm or disprove quickly. Scale also makes layered and index structures viable, so a simple fixed rate is frequently not the best available answer — a risk question rather than a price one.
Reliability makes energy supplier vetting unusually important: a supplier default returning accounts to default-service pricing is a budget event nobody plans for. Renewable commitments are common in this sector and increasingly contractual rather than aspirational, which pushes toward PPAs and long-dated structures under renewable energy procurement and corporate sustainability planning. Sites with substantial standby generation can sometimes participate in demand response programs by load transfer rather than reduction, within air permit limits, which is the one demand-side option that remains open.
Data center energy: common questions
Why should a data center get a better electricity rate?
Because its load is flat, predictable and close to a unity load factor, which imposes almost no shape or balancing risk on a supplier. Suppliers price uncertainty, and there is very little here. A data center being quoted like a variable commercial account is a finding, and it is visible before any bid goes out.
Can a data center participate in demand response?
Not by reducing IT load, but sites with substantial standby generation can participate through load transfer, subject to air permit limits on run hours. Some operators also shift non-critical batch workloads between sites where the architecture allows. For most facilities this is a marginal opportunity rather than a strategy.
How do renewable commitments change data center procurement?
They lengthen it. Meeting a genuine 24/7 or 100% renewable commitment usually requires power purchase agreements or long-dated structured supply rather than annual REC purchases, which means the energy contract term and the sustainability commitment have to be designed together. Buying attributes annually against a commitment framed as continuous is a reporting mismatch that gets harder to defend over time.
What is the most important contract term for a colocation operator?
How costs are allocated and recovered from tenants, alongside the supply terms themselves. A colocation operator is effectively reselling power, so the relationship between the supply contract, the tariff and the tenant recovery method determines margin — and a mismatch between contract structure and recovery structure is where operators lose money without an obvious cause.
