Where should a commercial facility start with energy efficiency?
With measurement, then with the measures that require no capital. Setback scheduling, compressed air leak repair, sequencing controls and eliminating out-of-hours load routinely produce savings before any project is funded, and they also reduce the demand peaks that set billing demand — which is a separate saving from the consumption reduction.
How are efficiency projects ranked?
By payback after utility incentives, with demand charge impact counted alongside consumption. That second term is frequently omitted and frequently decisive: a measure that reduces consumption modestly but shaves the peak interval can outperform a larger measure that reduces consumption evenly across the month.
Are utility efficiency incentives worth pursuing?
Usually, and they are commonly left unclaimed because the application has to precede the work. Most utilities in deregulated states run commercial incentive programs covering lighting, HVAC, motors, controls and refrigeration, and the requirement to apply before installation is the single most common reason money is missed.
Should efficiency come before or after procurement?
