Zone J is its own market. New York City is transmission-constrained, so wholesale energy, capacity and ancillary costs all clear well above the rest of the state — a Buffalo business and a Manhattan business on the same Con Edison-style tariff would still pay materially different amounts, and the difference is the zone. Capacity alone is a large enough line item in Zone J that how it is treated in a supply contract often matters more than the energy price. Con Edison remains the delivery utility whoever supplies you, and the delivery charge is separately regulated, which means an ESCO offer quoting only the supply portion is describing well under half your bill.

Food Service is not the dominant sector in this territory, where commercial real estate, hospital systems, hospitality, food production and multifamily portfolios carry most of the commercial load. That is an advantage worth using: a food service load is unfamiliar enough locally that it is routinely priced off generic assumptions rather than off your actual usage.
